WINTER METALS REPORT 2009
Collecting Silver Coins Shows Big Payoff

February started with a bang, with the silver spot price at $12.67 an oz. and gold at $927.10 an oz. Both metals have already had nice runs this year, and we're only entering the second month! Those of you fortunate enough to have invested on or before Jan 1 of this year, congratulations on your gains. To put it in perspective, you made about two years of gains on what you would have made in a money market account, and you have a real asset! But for those of you who haven't purchased yet, or those who wonder if its time to take profits, what's an investor to do?

Here at USAcoincollecting.com, we use much of the same statistical analysis software that everyone else uses, but we tweak ours with some unique algorythms from our Georgia Tech graduate buddies (Thank you, K.L.S.!). We've seen some very interesting trends, and we think some very promising times are heading our way as investors, and troubling times for us as Americans. Start rereading your Howard Ruff books, people!

We would love to tell you that we called all of the market tops, but guess what? We, like everyone else, fell flat on our face in that regard. We thought silver would top out at about $16.50 an oz., gold at about $825.00 an oz. Yes, we can admit our mistakes! But then again, its nice to see ones targets reached and exceeded, too!

And we keep tweaking. And tweaking. And speaking.....with some of the leading players in the field. We're not talking about the gurus we all know about; We're talking about the guys who 1000 oz. Englehards as door stops, and name their kids Johnson and Mathey. The guys who wear silver lined tee shirts because they know that silver neutralizes odors in sweat (We're not making this up, people!).And you know what they have to say?

Michael K. Martin in a metals analyst and a personal friend who resides in Atlanta, GA. Mike is what I like to call a "Reluctant Bull". He likes to analyze from the bottom up, and asks this question on any of his metals purchases; "Why should I buy this?" He doesn't necessarily WANT to buy precious metals; he wants to be COMPELLED to buy precious metals! He told me recently that he has already bought all he's going to for this year; he's extremely disciplined. His own analysis shows silver moving to a bare minimum of $14.00 an oz. by the third quarter of 2009. If that doesn't sound very impressive, remember, that still a 10% gain over today's price....and that's his minimum!

And our predictions? Our analysis? Quantitative and Qualitative? 2009 will be a banner year for silver and gold, especially silver. We see silver prices rising substantially, although not getting quite as frothy as the highs tested in 2008. We expect silver to hit $18.00 an oz. and gold to hit $1000 an oz. within 6 months. Silver will probably test the $20.00 mark again but will fall short. For now. But as our economic train wreck piles up, all bets are off. But we're talking about the here and now. Our advise would be to acquire physical silver in the form of 90% silver coins, which are attractive, intrinsic, and recognizeable. a $1000 face value bag sells for about $11,364 (as per Wall Street Journal, 01/31/09) or for those on a limited budget, check out EBay or other similar avenues. Be careful of transaction costs, which can eat into your margins.

And start buying SOON. We are in a strange, new world, friends. As you watch your 401k get decimated as the S + P 500 falls by 38 % in a year, that beautiful roll of uncirculated Morgan Dollars just looks better and better! Good luck , God Bless, and tell a friend about USAcoincollecting.com!

NUMISMATICS: THE JOY OF COIN COLLECTING

by Andrew Patton

Numismatics is defined as the science of coins in relation to their historical providence.

Coin collecting has also been called “The Hobby Of Kings”. This is because at one time only "The Nobleman" could pursue a hobby where coins were the object being collected - not for the coin's monetary value, but because of its history, its rarity, its beauty, and its aura. The King of Siam (made famous for being the basis of the musical “The King and I”) was an avid coin collector, and owned the most fabulous Proof Set ever issued by the U.S. Mint.

The current environment for collecting coins is at a peak that hasn’t been experienced in decades. It is no longer a “Hobby Of Kings”; it is now a hobby for all who would appreciate its allure. Since the late 1990's, a culmination of events has lead to the explosive growth in the field. Just some of these events include the State Quarter program, introduced in 1999, the precious metals bull market of the last few years, the Baby Boomer demographic wave of extra time and money, and the absence of “real” collectibles in today’s disposable world.   $500 Beanie Babies, anyone?

How much are your coins worth? Keyword phrase: Coin Price Guides.

Reach into your pocket, pick through your change. Go ahead! Every coin is a book, and you’re living the current chapter. See that 1979 quarter? Remember Jimmy Carter and inflation? See that 1964 nickel? Remember the death of a President the year before? And that’s just what’s in your pocket! Visit your coin shop and pick up coins from during World War 2, the Great Depression, the Civil War. It’s a History lesson in a piece of silver!

Visit a coin shop and ask if you can see a Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece. This piece (and many others) rival what has been produced by great artists throughout history. And unlike a Picasso painting - you and I can afford to enjoy these creations.

Another reason for coin collecting is the potential for investment. In this very brief overview of the “Joys of Coin Collecting” my goal was to concentrate on the pleasure of the hobby. But let's be realistic - we all love a treasure trunk full of coins! Learn more in my article, "Can I Make Money Collecting Coins?".

When I began this article I dusted off my old dictionary to find the definition of Numismatics. Let me also share with you the definition immediately following:

Num-skull (num’-skul) Dolt; dunce; a stupid person.

And that's how the seasoned coin collectors define someone who does not research or read before buying coins. Thus the age old Mantra of Coin Collecting is: "Buy The Book Before You Buy The Coin!"

Here are just some of the books that myself and colleagues find handy:
(Numismatics Book Specials - click HERE)

Don’t be a numskull! For the record I was and I lost money. But then I was fortunate enough to meet a seasoned collector at my first coin show who gave me the advice I'm sharing with you here. (Since that time I've bought, sold and traded hundreds of thousands of dollars in coins).

I hope this helps you understand the some of the joys of Numismatics - Coin Collecting - and that you decide to join us as you begin your journey.
